Discovering Lowen’s Organic, Fair Trade and Natural Self-Care Products

Alright ya’ll! I am excited to share another skin care gem with you this month!

Some of you know I have been putting together a series of self-care “boot camp” challenges, and in my quest for finding a fun (yet challenging!) routine for foot care, I began hunting for safe, natural and effective products I could feel confident recommending to you all!

I did some thorough research on the cleanest, highest rated products, and while looking for some good foot care products, my search brought me to Lowen’s. I reached out to these lovely folks, and was delighted to hear that they would send me a sampling of their products to share with you all!

I have been using the products for about a month now, and while I did not find a product to add to my upcoming “natural foot pampering boot camp” challenge, I did find a lip balm I am TOTALLY adding to a face care boot camp later this year!

But first, a bit more on this family run company!

A Little Bit About Lowen’s

From the Lowen’s website (CLICK HERE to visit):

Lowen’s Natural Skincare is a family-owned and operated skin care company based in Calgary, Alberta. Conceived by a veteran Pharmacist committed to using organic, fair-trade, and/or locally-sourced ingredients, Lowen’s creates unique skin care products that are safe, effective, long-lasting, and affordable.

Lowen’s Natural Skincare is inspired by and named after our daughter, Lowen. After unsuccessful trials of commercially-available diaper rash treatments, we used our pharmaceutical knowledge and clinical experience to develop an innovative natural diaper balm using unconventional, unrefined locally-sourced ingredients. After some experimentation, we developed a formula that resolved Lowen’s diaper rash within days and, with continued preventative use, the rash never came back. We knew other parents faced the same dilemma we did and wanted to help them discover our product so that they, too, could prevent and treat diaper rash in their children. With that lofty goal in mind, Lowen’s Natural Skincare was born. After launching this flagship product, through extensive research and tenacity, we expanded our product line to include a variety of other balms, lotions, cleansers, scrubs, and creams.  Today, we continue to investigate and create new products to meet the needs of our customers.

We formulate our products using evidence-based, peer-reviewed, and personally-tested ingredients to ensure they are safe for you and your family.  We ensure that our ingredients are thoroughly evaluated for safety, effectiveness, environmental impact, and animal welfare by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

We source local, certified organic and/or fair trade ingredients whenever possible and continually review and refine our practices to adhere to the above. If we are unable to find an ingredient close to home, we expand our search to find unrefined, organic, fair-trade ingredients from other community-minded social enterprises.

As a rule our products do not have added scents (exceptions are our lip balms and shampoo which are naturally scented with low concentrations of essential oils and/or foods). We are PETA Certified and EWG Verified™.

My Thoughts on the Products

Butter Balm – All-Purpose Skin Balm

Lowen’s Butter Balm is completely free of petrochemicals, artificial preservatives, colorants or scenting agents. Our Butter Balm is an excellent barrier to irritants as well as being a very effective skin conditioner which means it is great for cuticles, knuckles, heels, tattoos, rashes, chaffing and more! Basically use it on any part of your skin that is dry, cracked, and/or regularly takes a beating (like hard working hands) – it even works well on your pet’s little paws.

MY THOUGHTS: This stuff is the real deal when it comes to creating a moisture barrier, while not drying out the skin. I tried this on my heels – which was perfect when my heels were severely cracked – but as the cracks in my heels healed up, I found that the Rub it in Why Don’t Ya Lotion was more effective for keeping my feet soft and hydrated. This is a GREAT product for diaper rash, and I am keeping it on hand for my little ones future bum owies. (Three months and no diaper rashes yet!) The tub is crazy generous, I don’t know how I will ever get through the whole container.. even using it on my feet regularly! A little bit goes a looooong way!

Rub it in Why Don’t Ya! Natural Lotion

I formulated Rub it in Why Don’t Ya (RIIWDY) formulated specifically for our daughter Lowen back when she was barely walking.  It is safe, effective and long lasting and particularly great for those with sensitive skin. Our natural is paraben free, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, contains no added fragrances and contains only minimal preservation. Try it.  We’re confident you’ll love it!

MY THOUGHTS: I tried this lotion on my feet, body, hands and face… I have to say my favorite use of this lotion is definitely as a body lotion – especially my legs! I have an oily to normal complexion, and the lotion on my face did not absorb as quickly as I like face lotions to, and left a bit of a greasy complexion. But on my legs and arms, my thirsty skin just drank it up, and the moisturized feel did not go away throughout the day, my skin felt soft and hydrated from morning till bedtime! I just wish the container was larger so I can use it longer between purchasing again!

Brown Sugar Baby Lip Balm

Brown Sugar Baby Lip Balm – “Now we shall dance, and yes, it will be a slow jam” – Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.  The story behind this flavour come from another hugely popular lip balm of ours – That being our Iced Mini Doughnut variety.  You see, back in the early(ier) days when I was playing around with our formulations and, in this case, working on a unique flavour inspired by the midway food at Calgary Stampede (you guessed it – mini doughnuts) and I ran out of cinnamon essential oil.  The brown sugar was already added in the batch, so the intended “Iced Mini Doughnut” lip balms became Brown Sugar Baby.  Turns out, these are just as popular.

This is by far my favorite product from Lowen’s (so far!)… it glides on smooth, leaves lips feeling soft and refreshed, and it smells wonderful! Even my husband loves this lip balm, and keeps trying to steal it from me! Haha. For the price, (just $4.25!!) you have NO EXCUSE to not try this! I tend to keep lip balms on hand EVERYWHERE (in my car, my purse, my gym bag, etc.) and this is totes getting a permanent spot in my lip care arsenal. I think it is officially the inductee into my upcoming mouth care boot camp! You gotta try it! <3
