Flu season is bad around here, ya’ll!
And while it is no secret that honey helps to soothe the throat and ease the effects of the cold and flu season (something I have blogged about extensively in the past!) many are not aware that there is one type of honey that contains far more medicinal properties than ordinary raw honey… Manuka Honey!
It’s long been on my foodie and natural living bucket list to try, and for good reason! Manuka Honey from New Zealand contains healing properties not found in other types of honey, making it extremely effective in treating a wide spectrum of health conditions. It is so effective in fact, that Manuka Honey’s natural antibacterial properties are now being used in hospitals to ward off antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria that cause potentially life threatening conditions such as MRSA and VRE. (Having had MRSA myself, you can see why I am intrigued by this honey!)
In addition to its impressive antibacterial activity, studies have also revealed Manuka Honey’s antiviral properties which make it effective in treating cold and flu symptoms. It has also been discovered that Manuka Honey contains more vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants than other types of honey. It has been argued that Manuka Honey can be more effective than any over-the-counter cold and flu medication found in pharmacies.
With flu season in full swing, I was reeeeeally excited when Wedderspoon reached out to let me know about their innovative line of Manuka Honey products. I have been so impatient to share this product with you guys!
About Raw Wedderspoon Manuka Honey
Drom the Wedderspoon website (CLICK HERE to visit):
Wedderspoon is committed to delivering the highest quality and purity of Manuka honey. Â To identify and measure the complex properties found in Manuka, Wedderspoon has created KFactorâ„¢, a holistic multi-stage authentication system named for the Key Factors inherent in this distinctive honey.
Our KFactor™ rating system is a Manuka grading system that is compliant with New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) who develop standards and regulate Manuka (and all other food and agribusiness) for the country, as indicated in this official letter. Wedderspoon also takes pride in sourcing, packaging and labeling all jars of our Manuka honey in New Zealand to ensure the highest standard and quality, unlike many other Manukas available today.
In its second phase, KFactor will define additional properties we can use to authenticate Manuka honey. Wedderspoon is funding research using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) imaging. This highly sensitive technology will not only measure known components, but also seek to identify additional components present only in Manuka honey. It is the synergy of live enzymes, high pollen count, DHA, methylglyoxal, and other key factors we hope to identify by the unique NMR technology.
In contrast to pasteurized honeys, our raw honey has naturally occurring live enzymes – and every jar is traceable back to the master beekeeper in New Zealand. Here at Wedderspoon we believe in delivering only the best, which is why all of our honey is always kept in its natural state, raw and unpasteurized.
Manuka honey is hazelnut in color falling into the Dark Amber category on the Pfund color grading system. Smelling Manuka for the first time you will quickly discover the subtle notes of fresh rain, and caramelized sugar — New Zealand in a jar. The flavor is equally impressive; as the honey crystals dissolve on your tongue. Your taste buds will come alive as they recognize earthy notes and caramelized sugars with hints of pepper and ginger.
Wedderspoon Manuka is raw, Non-GMO verified and every jar is sourced, packed and sealed in New Zealand for the ultimate in authentic quality.
How to Use Manuka Honey To Fight the Flu and Colds
While there is no solid consensus on the “perfect” formula for Manuka Honey to fight active colds / flu, the general guidelines seem to be:
- 1 mug of hot water
- Juice from one lemon
- 1/2 to 1 heaping teaspoon of Manuka HoneyÂ
Stir till the honey is dissolved and sip the whole concoction slowly. Repeat as needed. Safe for children, but DO NOT give to infants / babies!
