Breakfasts are the bane of my dieting existence.
Mornings around here are either go go go, OR if it’s a slow morning, I am in full on zombie mode. (Not a morning person here.) It takes all my energy to just trudge to the coffee maker before I am bombarded with the onslaught of demands from my children (changing diapers, feeding kiddos, etc. etc.)
So a quick and easy – and high protein! – breakfast and snack option is pretty much a Godsend for me.
So why a protein shake for breakfasts and snacks? SO GLAD YOU ASKED!
Protein is one of the most important nutrients in the human diet. Without it, the body can’t form new blood cells, repair tissues, build muscle, or fight off sickness. Protein is also an important part of maintaining your energy levels, and without enough of it in your diet you can end up tiring out more quickly.
High protein snacks are also vital to maintaining a healthy weight loss diet, since skipping meals means missing out on protein, which is why people who try to lose weight by simply “not eating” often end up exhausted, moody, and depressed. A good diet shake should have a decent amount of protein in it to help give your body what it needs.
About the South Beach Diet High Protein Chocolate Shake
Good for Phase One or Two, and suitable as a breakfast or snack on the go, these high protein, primarily whey-based chocolate shakes are exceptionally good. They are rich and creamy, perfect for a quick breakfast.
According to the South Beach Diet website (CLICK HERE to view / purchase):
It’s everything you need in a shake—and more! Packed with 20 grams of protein and only 160 calories, South Beach Complete™ fills you up and never lets you down. Rich in vitamin D and a good source of calcium, this flavorful shake contains probiotics to support digestive and immune health. With no added sugar, artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors or preservatives, it’s “complete” goodness in a glass. Grab a seven pack to nourish your body all week.
My Thoughts on the Shakes
I am not a big fan of meal replacement shakes, and when I do drink them I tend to add my own amendments to make them more palatable (for instance, adding more chocolate or sweetener or whey protein) but these are surprisingly good as is, no amendments needed.
Also, for most pre-mixed protein shakes, I have to whip out the good ol’ blender, because some whey drinks just WILL NOT mix by hand. But using just the South Beach Diet shake mix container (the nifty kind with the little ball inside that helps mix and agitate the drink), these didn’t taste chalky or coarse AT ALL. They mixed really well and resulted in a pleasantly smooth and thick drink, which is quite impressive for a hand shaken drink!
These really are a great quick snack on the go. They are filling and nutritious, providing a nice boost of energy when you feel that energy slump between meals. Even if you are not strictly following a South Beach Diet plan, these are a great shake to add to your healthy eating routine!

I love protein shakes or smoothies for breakfast, but recently have woken up so late that it’s lunch time.

Morning smoothies are my go to with plant-based protein powders, turmeric, ginger, kale, etc. and whatever fresh fruits and veggies I have on hand. And it’s a good way to get my husband to get more veggies into his day! The ingredient list on those shakes are a little scary.
Uh oh, which ones??
I’m usually not a fan of meal replacements either. Good to know that this one doesn’t taste chalky!
Yeah, it comes out really thick and smooth in texture!
It’s great that these can mixed without a blender! I usually make my own smoothies with protein and other add-ins as needed for breakfast.
Yeah, it makes them really handy for snacking on the go!
I’m the exact opposite of you. I love breakfast but by the time dinner comes around I’m so tired and over the day I grab the first easy thing I can which is usually calorie-laden takeout. I’m also not a fan of meal replacement shakes because they usually taste like cardboard and I’m still hungry usually an hour or so later so I end up eating again and taking in more calories than I would have if I just ate a meal but I can see how it can work for someone who doesn’t have much time in the morning.

Thanks for review this Gingi! The chocolate shake sounds delicious!
It is! You should give it a try sometime!
I love that you have a plan, gingi. WW has been my go-to healthy eating source for years. But anything with chocolate holds a dear place in my heart.
But right now, being inside and fighting a wicked cold has me wanting to consume everything in sight! I can’t wait to get out and about again.
;-}
I’m seeing a bit of a lull in my weight loss in the last few days, so I am getting antsy and a bit nervous.. but I am gonna keep on keeping on!!
Looks so delisious!
It is quite yummy!
Hahaha I hear you, i have oatmeal in the mornings, can’t do shakes they don’t agree with my um “system,” but these sound excellent.

Hahaha… I lived on oatmeal when I was pregnant!! It was one of my crazy intense cravings!!
I drink workout recovering protein drinks because I’m not much of a fan on meal replacements either. I’d rather eat a meal instead, but I love having them after a workout and my favorite flavor to have is chocolate. I feel like the vanilla flavors always taste like chalk, haha. Don’t even ask me how I know how chalk taste, lol. Anyway, I’m glad you found a brand you like and thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, girl! I hope you have a great week ahead!
XO,
Jalisa

I’m really glad to hear that these shakes are so good. Most meal replacement shakes are so good.
Are, or aren’t? 😉
I often think about doing a meal replacement shake for when I’m on the road. Might have to look into it.
Yeah, it’s sooooo convenient!!
These sound like a winner- I hate it when my protein doesn’t blend up and is all gritty! And these are super low-carb, which is awesome!

Yeah, check it out when you can! <3
This sounds great for helping kickstart your day (especially when in a hurry!). You make a great point, protein is SO important for our bodies.

Yeah, that is one nutrient aspect I am often lacking…
It would be breakfast all day long if I had those.
Hahaha.. .maybe avoid these ones then?
