The CSM Cocktail – An X-Files Inspired Cocktail

So I know I posted a similar cocktail recently with The Deep Throat, but I am actually having a lot of fun experimenting with liquid smoke in cocktails..

..and what better character to make a cocktail from than the Cigarette Smoking Man!

The Cigarette Smoking Man (abbreviated CSM in fan circles) is from The X-Files, and he is the arch-nemesis of FBI Agent Fox Mulder. The show’s characters refer to him by variations of “the Smoking Man” because he is almost always seen chain-smoking “Morley” cigarettes.

Although he utters only four audible words in the entire first season of the show, the Cigarette Smoking Man eventually develops into the series’ primary antagonist. In his early appearances, he is seen in the offices of Section Chief Scott Blevins and Assistant Director Walter Skinner, Mulder and his partner Dana Scully’s supervisors. An influential man working for the powers that be, he is a key member in a government conspiracy known only as the Syndicate, who are hiding the truth of alien existence and their plan to colonize Earth. His power and influence remained strong, even after most of the Syndicate was destroyed.

The Smoking Man is portrayed by Canadian actor William B. Davis. When Davis first received the role, the character was written as an extra for the pilot episode. He returned for small cameo appearances during the first season, making increasingly more appearances in the seasons that followed. So he essentially went from a cameo appearance to becoming TV Guides list of “The 60 Nastiest Villains of All Time”.

This cocktail is another twist on an old fashioned (I am trying to be more creative with my base recipes, bear with me on this!!) with the addition of liquid smoke. Served over ice, it is surprisingly crisp while maintaining its smoky quality.

1 teaspoon of fine sugar

1 dash of Angostura bitters

1 shot of whiskey

½ shot of water

1 drop of liquid smoke

Shake all ingredients and pour into a glass filled with ice. Enjoy!

I’ve never heard of adding liquid smoke to a cocktail… I was just telling my husband about this, he uses liquid smoke sometimes to cook with. VERY cool and interesting!

Liquid smoke just sounds fun doesn’t it, lol. I use Angostura bitters all the time, it helps with belly aches which I tend to have often. I have all the ingredients to this one Gingi! I’m making it tonight 😉

I am a fan of Peychauds bitters over Angostura, though I believe the latter has more medicinal properties… that is MY kind of grown up medicine! 😉

I am not a big fan of whisky so I’m not sure this one would be for me but it’s a great idea and would be a fun one to serve if you were having friends over 🙂 x

what a sophisticated cocktail! i can honestly say i’ve never tasted liquid smoke (to my knowledge) but i imagine it must add so much complexity to a drink like this! nice. 🙂

    • 27 March, 2017 at 4:54 pm

It’s used in some meat heavy recipes that I have worked with in the past, but I like using it in cocktails by far the best!

  • 29 March, 2017 at 4:02 pm

This such a fun idea and I’m sure the smoking man would have över this drink.

Hope I can comment this time. 🙂

What an interesting cocktail! I’ve only ever used liquid smoke in food recipes. Never heard of it being used in a beverage before. Sounds neat!
