Spring has finally sprung here in the Pacific Northwest and I went to work with the kiddos to brush up our little front porch and garden beds to welcome the warmth and sunshine!
One of the newest additions to our front yard this spring is our little bird feeder area by the side of our front porch because it’s just not spring if your house isn’t covered with birds and buzzing insects, amirite?!
Now, we already had these feeders (the lantern shaped one was our very first bird feeder we bought on a whim at a hardware store about 10 years ago, the Good Directions feeder was from a fun sponsored blog post (CLICK HERE to check it out!), so while we owned these two, we just hadn’t really put them to good use at this new home here in the Pacific Northwest.
Last year I did TRY, we stuck our Good Directions feeder out in the very back end of our lawn within view of our homeschool windows so we could birdwatch during school. It worked a little TOO well, and hordes of birds descended upon the feeder, and the ENTIRE feeder seed was being wiped out in just a few hours. (Not even joking.. we would fill it up at 8am and it would be emptied out by noon.) There are just SO MANY birds here in the PNW, far more than we got in our old neighborhood in Central California, so I figured birdwatching via our own feeding station was just not a sustainable hobby for us and over the winter I stored the feeders away for a future home.
But spring just doesn’t seem springy without a bird feeder! So we decided to give it another shot. This time we moved the feeders suuuuuper close to the house, hugging right up to within arms reach of the front porch so that we can watch the birds from the living room window, and see them flitting around while I read and drink coffee outside in the mornings.
And… it worked! Only the bravest of the brave birds (mostly juncos, sparrows and finches) visit the feeder, and they are emptying it at a sustainable rate. AND now we have birds flitting around our yard and porch alongside the tulips and blossoms and ferns…. AND IT FINALLY FEELS LIKE SPRING!!!
Beautiful macro shots!
p.s I don’t use any special equipment, just a couple of reflectors and try to use daylight as much as possible. The photos using artificial light ain’t my favourite.
You are legit one of my food photography blogger heros, haha… check out my next blog post (will be posting later today!) where I tried to channel my inner Angie. 😉
Awww! These shots are amazing!
