My Grandma Ree passed away last year, and some of the items by children personally inherited included a giant cement garden angel, some cement garden frogs, and some wire garden decor items. We brought them home to the PNW from Central California, and while they were sun bleached and cracked before, they are waterlogged and soggy now. Which got me thinking about how to protect these garden statues so that my kids can continue to enjoy them with THEIR children.
Garden statues are a beautiful addition to any outdoor space. They can add personality and charm to your garden, but they are also subjected to harsh weather conditions that can cause damage over time. That’s why it’s essential to seal your cement garden statues to protect them from the elements.
While consulting the internet on this issue, I’ve discovered that sealing your garden statues is crucial if you want them to last. Without proper protection, your statues can crack, fade, and even crumble away.. I’m already seein the start of the crumbling on my Grandmas statues! And nobody wants to see a beloved garden angel reduced to a pile of rubble.
So, how do you protect your garden statues? It’s easy! All you need is a can of sealant spray available for less than $10 at most garden supply and hardware stores (I used the Rustoleum brand, but there are SO many out there!). The sealant spray creates a protective barrier that helps keep water, UV rays, and other damaging elements from penetrating the statue’s surface.
But before you start spraying, there are a few things you should know. First of all, make sure your statue is clean before applying the sealant. Use a soft brush or cloth to remove any dirt or debris from the surface. Then, let the statue dry completely before starting.
Next, shake the can of sealant well and hold it about 8-10 inches away from the statue. Start spraying in a sweeping motion, making sure to cover the entire surface of the statue. Be sure to apply the sealant evenly, and don’t forget to get into any crevices or hard-to-reach areas.
Once you’ve covered the entire statue, let it dry for at least 24 hours before exposing it to any moisture. And that’s it! Your cement garden statue is now protected and ready to weather any storm.
In conclusion, sealing your cement garden statues may seem like a small task, but it can make a big difference in the longevity and appearance of your outdoor decor. So, go ahead and seal those statues! Your garden gnomes will thank you.
