I’ve always been a fan of Arthur Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes stories, and didn’t anticipate loving the movie with Robert Downey Jr. so much! When we decided to do Sherlock Holmes as a group cosplay for the midnight release of the second movie in 2011, Jonathan and I decided to do Dr. John Watson and Mary Morstan, and our friends Will and Houkje did Holmes and Irene Adler.
We bought the bulk of the fabric for this dress from the Fabric District in Los Angeles at $2 a yard… I so love that place! I made my Mary Morstan skirt and top using a Simplicity steampunk pattern that I tweaked a bit (soooo many knife pleats, yargh!), and the Irene Adler dress and Holmes jacket Jonathan and I made in less than two weeks! We worked so fast that the air was literally full of floating fabric debris and I was coughing up cotton and polyester for DAYS. I am not even exaggerating. It was… creepy. lol. The suit Jonathan is wearing was an epic thrift store find, and is not his go-to suit for dress up occasions. He looks quite dapper in it if I do say so myself.
We took the photos at Travel Town in Griffith Park in Los Angeles (which was a pain, when I accidently brought my broken lens, and we had to make an hour long trip BACK to get it so we could shoot… DOH!) But it was an overall fun shoot, and I’m happy with the steampunk effect I was able to whip up in Photoshop. ^_^
