Willow Cosplay Photoshoot at the Kaweah Oaks Preserve in Visalia, California
9 January, 20152 Min Read
The Freeman family donned our Willow cosplay (yes, THE Willow cosplay that I’ve been working on for-freaking-ever.. I’m talking, while we were still in Pensacola, Florida) for a little photoshoot at the Kaweah Oaks Preserve in Visalia, California. The original plan was to drive to the Sequoias to take pictures in the snow, but busy schedules didn’t allow for it, and we wanted to get this cosplay pictures sooner rather than later, what with me having an ever ballooning preggo belly. 😛
For those of you who don’t know, Willow is a 1988 film directed by Ron Howard and produced by George Lucas, and one of my all-time favorite movies. Way before I had kids – heck, way before I met Jonathan – I always said if I had a girl first I’d do a Willow cosplay, and a boy first would be a Labyrinth cosplay, hehe.
My husband enjoys Willow, and particularly enjoys the novel, but doesn’t have that blind fan girl passion I suffer from. Seriously, if the Willow universe were as diverse as Lord of the Rings, I would seriously jump ship. Yeah, I said it.
Anyway, for our family cosplay, I went as nightgown version Sorsha (I’d have much rather been her warrior version, but being seven months pregnant just didn’t allow for it..), Jonathan was swordsman version Madmartegan and Tessa was little Elora Danan.
When we wore these costumes to Stan Lee’s Comikaze in Los Angeles (click here to see pictures from that event) I was AMAZED at how many people actually recognized our cosplay! While it wasn’t the typical “get stuck in a pose forever” cosplay, lots of people chased us down to ask if we were from Willow, or geek out asking for photos over the obscure cosplay, or (most frequently) fawn over and complement our little Elora Danan – who amazingly enough kept her hat / wig on for the ENTIRE DAY, even though she has never, in the entirety of her existence, kept a hat on for more than 30 seconds.
So anyway! Here’s some of the photos from our small little photoshoot! To check out some of our other cosplays, CLICK HERE!
Are you a fan of Willow? Did we do the characters justice? Share below! ^_^
I can’t tell if you did justice to cosplaying the characters because I haven’t heard of Willow before. Though I have a comment on LOTR and that is… I don’t like all of it. 🙁 It’s too serious for my taste.
However from a different perspective, these are really good photos and also family portraits! I love the genuine smiles your daughter has in all photos.
For a moment I thought it’s Austin Winkler. Great pictures, Gingi. I think you guys did an awesome job on it. I love it.

Wow, your little Elora is spot-on! Yes, I’m a huge fan of Willow. Always have been. This makes me so happy.
Do you self-time so you can get in the photos, or do you have a helper?
Right?! And she makes SUCH a cute ginger, haha. I sometimes self-time, but this time around I had my sister play photographer for me. ^_^ And YAY!! Someone knows what Willow is! lol!
I still can’t get over how she’ll wear her Elora hat/wiggy piece, but won’t wear regular hats! Little star knows she’s ‘on’ I guess. These turned out so well. Beautiful place over there. What do you have planned for the first cosplay with Thyme?
Right?! I don’t get it.. when we went to the snow in 15 degree weather, she kept ripping her hat off.. but wearing a sweaty wig cap?? No problem! Crazy child! I don’t have any cosplayed planned for Thyme yet.. but I think next cosplay we do will be Inuyasha, with Jon as Inuyasha, me as Kagome and Tessa as Shippo..
Amazing, gorgeous photos!!! I haven’t watched or read it. But looks like it’s a great one! So cute of Tessa to hold on to her hat for the entire day. Looks perfect! 🙂
I’ve heard of Willow but I’m not familiar with it. However, your daughter is absolutely precious in these photos! (You and your husband look great too.) I enjoyed scrolling through all of your cosplay photos; there were lots that I recognized!
Thanks for visiting Thistle Cove Farm and, sorry to say, I’ve never heard of Willow or even know what cosplay means. I think, perhaps, costume play? Your daughter is beautiful and adore the photo of your husband holding her in the air. All the photos are wonderful but that one touches my heart.

Thank you! You should check Willow out, it’s a great movie!
That is super cool – although I never saw that movie and even had to google what cosplay meant – lol
Looks like fun! 🙂
LOL, cosplay is a VERY addicting hobby! 😉

Yeah, she is a little cam ham! I grew up cosplaying with my family, and I hope Tessa has as much fun with it as I did as a kid!!
Great pictures!

Costume play is exactly what it means! It’s a hobby that originates from Japan. It’s quite addicting! ^_^
And that’s my favorite photo too! hehe!
Oh wow I haven’t seen Willow in years and it used to be one of my favorites. I need to find it and share it with the kids. 🙂 You all look GREAT!
YAY!! Someone else knows about Willow!! Hehehe.. thanks! We had a blast playing dress up! ^_^
