No one warned me that after having kids my hair would fall out by the fistfuls. And not just with the first kid, either. With EVERY. SINGLE. CHILD.
While the hair loss has largely stopped from the birth of my son (who is 15 months old now), I have found that from the first child to this last one, my hair is no longer as thick as it once was. And I have this strange little regrowth line along my hairline where you can see the hair all uniformly starting to grow back. Anyway. It sucks.
Thus far, I have just taken a lazy just-stop-caring approach to saving my hair. So when Cleure – a natural personal care, skin care and makeup line – asked if I would write about Emu Oil, I was intrigued.
My first thought was… “What the heck is Emu Oil?!”Followed by some ferocious Google detective work.
As the Cleure website shares:
For thousands of years, the benefits of emu oil have been known by the Australian Aborigine. The ostrich-like emu is a native of Australia, however, it is raised in the U.S.A. as well, for their naturally lower fat meat. The oil is obtained from a layer under the skin and refined (sterilized). Cleure Emu Oil for Very Dry Sensitive Skin is obtained from emu that are organically fed and are free range. American Emu Oil Association seal is on every bottle to ensure purity. Buy emu oil for hair and skin today! WebMD reports Emu Oil helps conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dandruff and age spots. Can be used as leave-in hair conditioner.
Studies Reporting Emu Oil Benefits:
Relief from very dry skin under most conditions, including while receiving chemo or radiation therapy for cancer treatment.
Temporary relief of muscle pain due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
Studies show it as non-comedogenic (does not clog pores).
May have anti-aging properties.
According to National Institutes of Health, study reported Emu Oil helped with types of eczema, including seborrheic dermatitis.
Antibacterial, helps remove dirt and impurities from pores. Shown to help reduce acne.
Studies report it is hypoallergenic and well tolerated by those with sensitive or allergy-prone skin.
Emu oil for skin is excellent for various skin conditions, such as burns and scar tissue.
Mayo clinic indicates certain alternative therapies, including emu oil, have been touted to treat rosacea. But no conclusive evidence has been shown that these alternative therapies are effective.
Soften nail beds by immersing them in Cleure Emu Oil for 15-20 minutes.
Massage a small amount of Cleure Emu Oil into the scalp two or three times a week or after washing your hair. It helps decrease dandruff and moisturizes the scalp.
Emu Oil and Hair Growth
Emu oil has shown some promise towards a natural way of reviving hair follicles towards health and growth, particularly due to the anti-inflammatory properties it has.
Boston University School of Medicine led by Professor Michael Hollick, M.D., Ph.D., found treating scalp with emu oil resulted in 20% increase in hair growth activity, compared to skin treated with corn oil.
Emu oil is rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs) specially oleic acid, which penetrates deep into the skin, and suspected of promoting healthy hair follicles.
Studies reported from England, indicated that there was an average of 8% per month and 48% over six months of hair regrowth with emu oil. The participants were told to apply emu oil on their scalp and to leave it on for at 30 minutes before rinsing. Hair growth became evident after following these instructions for 30 – 90 days.
My Personal Thoughts On Emu Oil for Hair
It’s far too early to make any kind of observation on the effect emu oil has had on my hair so far in regards to growth. But one thing I will say is that OMG IT MAKES MY HAIR SO SOFT AND FULL.
And this kind of confused me, because when it comes to emu oil and hair, EVERYONE talks about the hair regrowth properties, and almost no one mentions it’s use as a deep conditioner. I am not kidding when I say that emu oil has a greater effect on my hair silkiness and softness than argan oil has.
(I thought maybe I was crazy, but I saw a couple people voicing the emu oil beating out argan oil for hair in some online forums, so I’m not alone! Lol..)
Since I have been spending a lot of my time working from home and being a homebody this month, twice now I have run a couple of pumps of emu oil through my hair, starting at the tips and then massaging into my roots. I put my hair in a loose bun and slept on it overnight (on a pillowcase I didn’t mind getting oily!) In the morning I just shampooed and conditioned like normal, and the result was AMAZ-ZA-ZING.
So at the end of the day, I am less concerned with it’s regrowth properties, and more interested in this oil as an affordable and effective deep conditioning treatment! Absolutely adding this one to my weekly hair care routine!

Yeah, NO ONE told me!!! Total broadside when I felt like I was going bald after my first was born. 🙁
I would love to try this emu oil because I lose lots of my hair and I have tried TONS of natural products, but so far nothing has helped.
I don’t know that it works for hair loss just yet.. but it DOES make my hair feel thicker, which is a step in the right direction I suppose?!

I have know about emu oil, they sell it here and even raise them in the country. But never tried it. For sure an overnight is better than 30 min. Glad you love it so much so far.
Yeah, I kind of want to try it on my skin too, but I’m too scared to, haha… it seems so thick, and even though it’s supposed to be good for skin on your face I’m just like…. uhhh, my hair is fine, lol.
I never had this problem but who knows what the future holds. Would love to try this!

Ooooo…I can’t believe I’ve never heard of emu oil being used for hair re-growth. Although I don’t have this problem (knock on wood), this is great to know as I do know some people with hair growth issues. Also good to know it’s a great hair conditioner. Now…dry hair…that’s very relevant to me:) Thanks for the heads up.
I always thought my problem was having coarse and kinky hair.. but now I’m realizing that it’s just REALLY dry, haha!
Such an interesting oil… sounds great!

I have emu oil, but I have never used it on my hair. I’ve been missing out clearly! My daughter has alopecia and has some topical medication, but I think I want to try that too just to see if it helps at all! Thanks for sharing all these uses!
Of course!! I’m so glad you found this post useful! <3
I’ve never heard of Emu oil but it sounds like it has so many great benefits! Love that you saw immediate results on your hair!

Yeah, it’s not really one of the more well known beauty oils I’ve noticed…
That sounds interesting. I’ve heard of Emu oil, but have never actually tried it. You make it sound very tempting though.

Hahaha, I feel kinda badass for sharing little known info with this post! 😉
How interesting- I hope this oil continues to work! My friends who’ve had babies complain about the hair loss, it’s so crazy and I imagine frustrating!
