Hey there! I’m here with another fun vintage recipe straight out of the Disney sponsored 1938 Texas Electric Company Brochure. This brochure came out during a time when electric appliances were the latest and greatest marvels of the modern kitchen. From shiny new ovens to sleek mixers, households across America were buzzing with excitement as they embraced the wonders of electricity.
Among the pages of this vintage brochure is this Snow White’s Devils Food Cake recipe. Now, without further ado, let’s roll up our sleeves and get baking!
Ingredients:
- ½ c. shortening
- 2 sq. (2 oz.) unsweetened cooking chocolate, melted
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 c. granulated sugar
- ½ tsp. salt
- ½ c. boiling water
- 1½ c. sifted cake flour
- ½ c. sour milk or buttermilk
- 2 eggs, unbeaten
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Cream shortening 1 minute, then add the sugar gradually with the electric beater at high speed. Scrape bowl; beat 1 minute.
- Stir water and chocolate smooth; add at medium speed.
- Add eggs, beating 1 minute at high speed after each is added.
- Add sifted dry ingredients alternately, with milk and vanilla – ¼ of each at a time at low speed. Scrape bowl; beat few seconds.
- Bake in greased pan 8 x8 x 2″ in moderate oven of 350° F. for 50-60 min.
And there you have it! A taste of the past brought to life in your very own kitchen! Until next time, happy baking!
Bon appétit!
