By doing this, you can build momentum and make steady progress towards your larger goals. I have been doing this since the 2023 New Year and it had been GAME CHANGING!
The idea behind setting micro goals is simple: instead of focusing on big, daunting goals that can feel overwhelming (like losing 20 pounds or building passive income streams), you break your goals down into small, achievable steps that you can take each day.
By focusing on making small improvements each day, you gradually build momentum and start to see real progress towards your larger goals.
So how does this work in practice? Let’s say your goal is to start getting up earlier so you can have more time to exercise before the kids wake up. Instead of setting a goal to wake up at 5am every day (which might feel impossible if you’re used to sleeping in), you could set a micro goal to wake up just 10 minutes earlier than you did the day before. The next day, you could aim for another 10 minutes earlier, and so on, until you’ve gradually shifted your wake-up time to your desired goal.
The key is to make your micro goals small enough that they’re achievable, but still challenging enough that you’re pushing yourself to improve. Aim to be just 1% better than you were the day before, and celebrate your progress along the way. Maybe you slept in a few minutes longer than you wanted to, but you still woke up earlier than you did yesterday – that’s progress! Celebrate it, and use it as motivation to keep pushing yourself.
When setting micro goals, it’s important to make them specific, measurable, and achievable. For example, instead of setting a goal to “eat healthier,” set a goal to eat a serving of vegetables with every meal. This way, you have a clear target to aim for and can measure your progress. Another benefit of micro goals is that they help you build confidence and momentum. When you set a small goal and achieve it, you feel a sense of accomplishment and motivation to keep going.
As you continue to achieve these small goals, you’ll build momentum and confidence that will help you tackle larger goals, and over time, these habits become a part of your daily routine and require less effort and willpower to maintain.
