Before I embark on any home DIY project, I always consult the wise sage of the World Wide Web…
So I was surprised to learn that very little has been written about closet painting… which is strange, since nearly every room has a nook or cranny for storage. There are pretty much a constant in most room remodels and painting projects.
What I did discover is that this space often presents a color conundrum: Whether or not to paint the closet in a hue that matches, or at least complements, the walls around it.
Debbie Zimmer of Paint Quality Blog writes:
If the area is simply a recessed space, then visually, it’s part of the room. In this case, the best option is to paint the closet in the same – or a similar – color as the surrounding walls. Following through with the precise color used in the adjoining room better integrates the closet design-wise; if you yearn for a little variety, then simply choose a lighter version of the same hue.
Great advice but…. most closets are enclosed! All of the closets in my 1950s style ranch house has a hinged door or slider that clearly defines the area as a discrete space.
From extensive trolling on the forums of Houzz.com, I have come to believe that regardless of what is housed in the closet – wardrobe, linens, cleaning supplies, holiday decorations, etc. – WHITE is the go to choice for interior closet spaces. Here are the 3 reasons why:
1. White makes a small closet brighter.
When you are working in a small area, especially with limited lighting, you will want a color that reflects and visually opens up the space. The better visibility offered by white paint is also helpful when searching for things in a laundry closet or pantry.
2. White helps you to clearly match color shades.
You really do not want anything other than white when it comes to clearly discerning the color, pattern, and texture of your threads.
3. White just looks cleaner.
When it comes to closets where you house clean linens and clothing items, what could possibly be more appropriate than a bright white environment? White makes things look fresh, clean and pristine (just stay on top of dusting and spills to keep it looking sparkling clean and tidy!).
I recently painted my cosplay storage closet white, from the ceiling to the floor, along with all of the shelves. It is amazing how big, clean and NEW the closet looks, even when it is packed to the gills with costumes, props and storage props! (Speaking of storage props, CLICK HERE to check out my post on DIY cosplay sword and prop storage!)
;D
Boas razões! hehehe!
Ótima sexta!

They sound like good reasons to me. A dark closet wouldn’t be as useful.
UNLESS, you were trying to hide dirt and dust, I guess?? haha
I love how a white closet makes everything look fresh and clean!
Same here!
My closets have been constructed from white board. I think it offers a cleaner interior look.
It really does, it give everything such a fresh and sharper appearance!
That is really clever! Mine is wood so it’s a little darker and I do have to take the clothes out so I can match them.
Paint it!!!! 😉
Yes, this sounds so logical! My closet is painted white—so glad to know it’s the best color!
I am still in the process of painting all of my closets white, but I am really loving the transformation so far!
I need a closet makeover stat. I need to purge, I have way too many clothes, and I can never find anything to wear. White closets are chic and fresh; I love the idea of painting your closet.
Yeah, I need to purge my main clothing closet right now.. I am focusing on the storage closets first, mostly because I don’t want to have to agonize over clothes just yet, lol!
I couldn’t agree more with all the reasons you’ve stated here, girlie! I love to organize my pieces by color and style and a white closet does make a difference and it also makes it look larger, though I’m not sure if that’s a good thing, haha (you’ll want to keep adding)! Thanks so much for sharing these great pointers with us, beauty, and I hope you’re having a great weekend so far!

Hi Gingi, 3 very good reasons, clean and bright always makes our clothes and shoes look better too!

I do like the color of white. Definitely makes everything brighter and nice!
Agree!!! <3 <3 <3
The insides of all my wardrobes are white and I totally agree that it just look fresher and cleaner and it’s so much easier to organise your clothes. I love white in general and actually my whole dressing room is white which a lot of people tried to talk me out of but I love it! x
I was surprised how much BRIGHTER my closet appeared when I painted it white! SO HAPPY I went with that color!
I totally agree with you – white is the best option!

<3 <3 <3 Glad you found the article useful! <3
The brightness factor is big for me. All of our closets are white!
Yup! Mine brightened up BIG TIME when I painted it!
My closet is white but it’s so small that you can’t really see the walls behind all the clothes, lol!
LOL, my cosplay storage closet is kinda like that, which is why I used stock images 😉
Great posts and reasons, all of our closets are painted white – it helps the clothes stand out and just seems brighter.
Yup! All good reasons! <3
I love love love white!
Clean and bright and allows your clothes to be seen for what they truly are!
{For better or worse!}
;-}
Hahaha, mine is sometime “for worse”… my kids love staining my clothes nowadays!!
I can’t agree with you more, white closet sounds like really clever solution 🙂
Yup! I am super happy with my closet now!
Great idea! I have an all white kitchen in the hopes that it doesn’t age!
I usually stay away from white in high traffic areas since stains and such show more.. but that is not a bad idea!
I could not agree more about this! A white color closet is always the best!!! An ultimate must have!
xx Leah
Glad you agree!!! <3
