When I first moved to the Pacific Northwest with my family I was surprised to learn that the military housing here on Whidbey Island does not have any kind of air conditioning system installed in the houses.
The military housing company, HUNT, assured us that it NEVER gets hot enough in the Pacific Northwest to warrant having an air conditioner in the homes. They told us repeatedly that all we would need to do is crack open a window if it ever gets on the warmer side.
Fast forward to our first summer in our new home (which was last year) aaaaaand… a record heat wave swept through the Pacific Northwest that made national news. Temperatures were so hot that asphalt was melting on our street, animals, babies and the elderly were getting heat stroke in their own homes, and hundreds of people died between Portland and Seattle from heat stroke.
The temperature in our house soared to 103 degrees fahrenheit, and to top it all off, the public facilities in our neighborhood where HUNTS housing office is located (that actually had air conditioning) was closed to the public “due to covid”… so there was nowhere with air conditioning that we could escape to.
It was one of the more miserable experiences I have ever had in the summer, and I grew up in the Central Valley of California, which is essentially a desert! The biggest outrage during this whole fiasco, is that the military housing we live in does not allow window mounted air conditioners, so it’s basically fans only while living here. So needless to say… we have been in the market for a really good fan before the next summer, which is rapidly approaching. (Seriously, how is the time flying by so fast?!)
While the heat wave last year was apparently unprecedented, almost everyone who lives here in military housing on Whidbey Island confirms that each summer these homes are overheated and miserable for about about one month out of the year. (Don’t get me started on the ethical shortcomings of putting military families in homes that don’t entirely fit the description of “safe and comfortable housing” that military members are entitled to.)
So when I had the opportunity to review this new fan by Dreo, I absolutely and without hesitation jumped on it. I absolutely NEED THIS FAN in my life… even though I’m not a fan of fans. Okay, let me explain what I mean…
As I mentioned earlier, I grew up in the Central Valley of California, which is essentially a desert. My earliest memories of our hottest summers with nothing but a swamp cooler, was of the giant 1980s style bladed fans that sounded like a plane about to take off. The incessant buzzing of the spinning blades throughout the night and day drove me INSANE fam. To this day I would rather be uncomfortably warm than listen to a bladed fan… I don’t even use the ceiling fans unless it is really, really warm. It is literally one of my pet peeve noises, so I am a VERY picky customer when it comes to acceptable levels of fan noise.
Soooo, with that in mind, I have to say with 100% honesty, I am EXCITED that this fan is whisper quiet. While I haven’t had a chance to use this fan in the heat of summer, I can tell that it is going to be a powerful and very welcome tool to beat the heat “that never happens” here in the Pacific Northwest… (note the sarcasm, all the locals warn that this summer will likely be uncomfortably hot as well, lol).
The fan was also very easy to assemble… it came with the base unattached in the box, and all you need to do is connect the two base pieces together, screw the base to the fan tower, and that’s it! And right out of the box it’s ready to go! And it is TALL and POWERFUL. I think the biggest problem with this fan is that we are going to want one in each room this summer, haha.
