This week my kids and I have been working on something magical and whimsical – our fairy garden village! Creating a fairy garden in your front yard is a fun and creative way to add a touch of enchantment to your home, and I’m convinced every home that believes in even the HINT of fairies should have one!
Our fairy garden started when one day a tiny magical fairy door appeared on our front porch. It looked JUST LIKE one you could pick up at Hobby Lobby (but of course that couldn’t be where ours came from! 😉 My oldest daughter, who was just 3 or 4 at the time, was ENCHANTED. And then slowly, every couple of weeks, a new fairy house would pop up scattered among our flower beds! The kids started leaving out presents for the fairies, and more and more fairies kept moving in.
I will always treasure these memories with my kiddos, and even though they are older now and the gifts to the fairies have stopped, we still maintain our fairy garden every spring and summer. So if you are interested in joining in on the magic, let’s get started!
First things first, you’ll need to pick a spot for your fairy garden. It can be a small patch of grass or a flower bed – just make sure it’s a spot that gets plenty of sunlight if you plan to add micro ground covers to your village. Once you’ve picked your spot, it’s time to start building your fairy garden! Here are some helpful tips to get you going:
- One fun way to create a unique and eye-catching fairy garden and set out the parameters is to use driftwood as a natural border for your fairy garden. Our village is ringed with driftwood the kids collected at the beach.
- Another great touch if you aren’t ready to invest in ground cover just yet, is to use aquarium gravel as the “floor” of your garden. You can choose bright and colorful gravel to create a vibrant and lively look, or go for a more natural look with earthy tones.
- Another fun touch is to use moss-covered stones for your fairy houses foundations. You can buy moss at the Dollar Tree or any other craft store and hot glue to rocks if you don’t live in a region with mossy rocks in the wild. Moss creates a natural and whimsical environment for your fairy friends.
- Be on the lookout for tiny houses, doors and fairy furniture at craft stores, Dollar Trees and garden centers. You never know when you’ll find the perfect addition to your growing village!
- You can try your hand at crafting items for your fairy friends from nature finds. Rocks, sticks, seashells, acorn caps, bark.. you are only limited by your imagination!
- Try adding some glow in the dark stones or solar twinkle lights for a magical night time effect!
- Be sure to seal and protect your fairy homes from the elements by giving them a quick coat of clear acrylic spray. We learned the hard way that being out in the elements (especially this PNW rain!) will make some cheaper fairy houses literally crumble into rubble! Oops!
- Now that you’ve got the basics set up for you fairy village, it’s time to add special touches with living plants! Add in some fairy-sized ground covers, flowers and grasses.. just be sure that you give them the light and soil they need to thrive!
I hope this post has inspired you to create your own fairy garden! Have fun and let your imagination run wild!
