This last weekend was my oldest daughter’s 9th birthday party, and the theme was her latest obsession: DRAGONS!
My kids always throw me curveballs and request party themes that aren’t the easiest to find at your generic Party City or Walmart, so I usually have to craft my own decorations, or widen my search to niche websites and blogs.
Initially I was thinking a dragon themed party would be hard to decorate since dragons aren’t a super popular theme at the moment, but I found EVERYTHING I needed on Amazon, which made for pretty effortless planning for our small party (about 10 kids total). So I thought I’d share the links and our party ideas with you! (My daughter also happened to have number of dragon items she sprinkled around the party space to decorate, which helped a lot with staging too – like her dragon books and her dragon “babies”, complete with “DO NOT TOUCH!” signs, haha!)
If you find yourself in need of dragon party supplies, and it’s time for dragons from lands near and far to descend upon your lair for some tail-shaking, fire-breathing, wing flapping fun, check these ideas and links out!
Dragon Pinata
Dragons can often be found guarding piles of shiny treasures, so this one seems like a no brainer! Fill a dragon pinata with candy and trinkets and then tell the party guests they must slay the dragon to collect his treasures. When the dragon is opened and the prizes pour out, the dragon is considered slain and the treasure is free for kids to gather and keep as their reward! My daughter was okay with this one “only if we pretend that it is a mean dragon”, haha.
Dragon Egg Hunt
We found these EPIC dragon eggs on Amazon, and they were an absolute hit! We hid the plastic eggs around the party space and sent the kids on a hunt for the eggs so that they could adopt and take home their own little baby dragon. It made for a great party favor!
Pin the Wing on the Dragon
No young kiddos birthday party is complete without a good old fashioned game of “pin the tail on”… although in this case it’s “pin the WING on” the Dragon! haha! I’ve never once had this game go smoothly and without cheating, but hey, the kids demanded it, so here we are. This set comes with the poster, wing stickers, prize tattoos and two blindfolds, so overall a good purchase!
Dragon Birthday Banner, Balloons and Cupcake Toppers
While this isn’t the most thorough party decoration pack I’ve purchased (there’s no cups, plates, napkins, etc.), it did the trick. The decals on the balloon are shamefully small and smell horrid, but for the price, I’m happy with the “buy and call it good” route rather than trying to DIY all these elements. The birthday banner and the cupcake toppers were also great!
Dragon Themed Party Favors
This bundle was VERY anemic – when we filled the small bags with the provided toys, it still looked fairly empty and sad, so we ended up stuffing these to the brim with leftover pinata candy before handing them out. These, paired with the dragon eggs the kids got to hunt for and keep, made me feel less like the “cheap party favor” mom I was feeling like before beefing these up. But they served as a good starting point for favors!
Other Decoration Items I Didn’t Buy, But They Look Fun!
Do you have any additional dragon themed party ideas you would like to share? Let me know and I’ll add it to the list!

Yeah, I always feel bad when the kids wreck a pretty pinata, haha!
I had no idea there were so much dragon themed things out there. How fabulous. But it makes sense after Game of Thrones, I bet,

Yeah, it was hard to find age appropriate cute dragons, lol.. my daughter likes more “serious” mythical dragons, but nothing too scary!
This is such a cute theme!
