Forget about spring cleaning, I am a firm believer that the best time to declutter is right before the New Year. Specifically, before the holidays get into full swing.
ESPECIALLY if you have any “New Year, New You” themed resolutions (weight loss, personal growth, etc.), there is nothing quite like entering the new year with a fresh start inside and out. And the last thing you want to do is scramble around while decking the halls, wrapping presents, sending Christmas cards, baking sugar cookies AND trying to indulge in a micro-cleaning challenge in the bedroom. Trust me girl, you want to get in on that cleaning action BEFORE the holidays hit.
After just having Baby #3 less than a month ago, I am one of those joining the weight loss resolution train this New Year, so taking a full inventory of my clothing and getting it all sorted is higher up on my priority list than it has been in previous years.
I just dove in to my pre-holiday organizing, and I am starting with the dresser drawers. We have our three week old sharing room with us, and there is no space for an additional dresser in our bedroom. Since we use the top of our dresser as the changing station for little mister, I have given my sock and undergarment drawer over to holding diapers and wipes and onesies and have put temporary plastic storage dresser in my closet.
At first I felt like I was making some grand sacrifice in giving up my dresser drawers, and moving my things to my closet… but I have to say, I rather like this arrangement a bit better! I am starting to wonder if it might be possible to move my husband’s things to a small inexpensive closet storage unit like mine, and then free up some bedroom space by losing the huge wooden dresser. Hmmmm, we shall see. But I digress! We were about to organize our sock and underwear drawers! First things first…
STEP ONE: Old with the old.
Go through your drawers and get rid of all socks and undergarments that don’t make the cut. Don’t keep anything that doesn’t fit, and inspect each garment for holes, excessive wear and tear, stretched or broken elastic, single socks without a mate, or anything you don’t / won’t wear. If you have clothing that doesn’t currently fit but will with weight loss, or any seasonal items, set them aside for storage. (If you are anything like me, your clothing pile just reduced by half!)
STEP TWO: In with the new.
Take an inventory of your remaining items and buy replacements for any categories you thinned too aggressively. Also be sure to buy any organizational tools and / or storage items. Think storage bins, vacuum seal pack and drawer inserts.
STEP THREE: Pack away storage items.
Move any seasonal items or “skinny clothes” into storage. To save space and protect your clothing from moisture, mold and moths, consider using vacuum seal packs.
STEP FOUR: Put your drawers together!
Before putting anything back, I prefer to wipe down the inside of the empty dresser drawers with a natural cleaning spray infused with essential oils, leaving the drawer smelling fresh and clean. Put your organizational inserts into the dressers, and begin folding and storing your items. You can sort by color and type, or if you are like me, sort by “things I like to wear frequently”. Haha.
Storing your socks and undergarments properly not only looks great, but it makes finding what you need a cinch. In my dresser, I use Songmics Foldable Storage Boxes, and they work like a charm!
The awesome folks at Songmics are actually extending a Thanksgiving giveaway of some of their best-selling storage and organizational items to TWO lucky Domestic Geek Girl readers! Read on to learn more about Songmics, and to enter for your chance to win an Organizational Drawer Divider Kit and Reusable Space Saver Vacuum Storage Kit.
Songmics Thanksgiving Giveaway
The brand Songmics was founded in 2012. (CLICK HERE to visit their website.) The product lines range from home organizers, makeup and jewelry organizers to outdoor and sports equipments and so on. The products are sold on Amazon in the United States, Canada, Germany, France, England, Italy, Spain and Japan. Songmics is always looking for ways to provide the products with the best quality at the lowest price.
Songmics is offering to two lucky winners a Foldable Storage Drawer Organizer Kit (CLICK HERE to view / purchase on Amazon) and Reusable Space Saver Vaccum Storage Kit (CLICK HERE to view / purchase on Amazon).
The organization kit is made from non-woven fabric which is breathable, mold-proof and moisture-proof and has ample room to sort your underwear, bras, socks, and accessories. This is the system that I have just begun using, and I am IN LOVE with how simple and straightforward it is.
These collapsible, multi-compartment storage boxes are exactly what I needed to tame my chaotic undergarments! It is so strangely therapeutic to no longer have to go searching through tangles of mixed items. I am actually ordering more of these to sort my husband’s drawers next, along with my other storage closets. I highly recommend!
The vacuum storage bag kit is brilliant for both long term and short term storage of clothing and fabric items. It quite literally reduces your storage space by up to 75%, while simultaneously offering protection from dust, mold, moisture and insects. (This is a HUGE benefit if you are like me and have to store your long term storage boxes in a garage or storage unit that is not weather proof!)
The bags feature a strong double zipper seal, and triple seal turbo valve, and the included pump allows you to easily and quickly seal, pump the air out, and store your clothing. It’s actually kind of fun, seeing how tiny you can squeeze a giant pile of clothing down to!

I also believe that! I rather do a deep clean before the season when I spent lots of time indoors becuse it is cold outside!
Those are rather neat, I have all my socks in an old wine basket, not very tidy, haha!
-Kati
Sounds totally intriguing though.. kind of industrial design chic! hehe!
;-}
I love organizing, tossing, rehanging, refolding, evaluating, tossing, donating.
And laundry, too!
My husband thinks I’m crazy.
Hahaha, there is something therapeutic about it, not gonna lie!
Amazing ideas! Nice post dear!

Thanks Anya! And thanks for stopping by!
Great ideas and ours need organizing again since my drawers are total chaos! Thanks!
Good luck on the giveaway!! <3
I’m loving both of these! I know I could really free up some space since a friend just gave me a bunch of her old clothes so I have way more than I normally do. I really like the vacuum seal bag for putting away “warm” clothes for the winter and vice versa.
-Lauren
Yeah, I feel absolutely liberated with the amount of space I get when I clear out my closet for seasonal wear! hehe!
I would use these in my bedroom to organize my mess.
They would be great for holding lots of different underwear. And I have lots of socks. If you usually throw your clothes into your drawers like I do, this is a perfect solution
SO TRUE!!!! I couldn’t be happier since I made the switch! <3

Looks so organized! I love it 😀
My daughter really needs these. So handy.
Those drawer organizers could be used for lots of other things, like my chocolate collection, or even rocket parts.
Well, those are pretty tame compared to what I thought you might come up with. 😉
I need to make some space in my daughter’s bedroom by packing away some of her seasonal clothing and organizing her other things. These would both be great for that purpose.
They are a lifesaver!!
I would store them under my bed.
Would use this in my room!
Great tips & giveaway, dear! Good luck to all! xoxo
Good luck to you too! <3
Awesome giveaway! I’m sorry I missed it. Organization isn’t always my strength. But I agree, toss stuff because the holidays to that you ready for all the new crap that you get for Christmas that you don’t want. Yup, I want to cancel Christmas because I’m a minimalist.
LOL, I am slowly progressing towards becoming a minimalist… it is driving my husband nuts! lol
This is so great. I love having everything organized like this. I so need a vacuum storage kit. It looks the best for storing clothing from one season to another.
