One of my favorite hands on homeschool learning topics is anything having to do with magnets! Kids have a blast playing with them, and when they are having fun you have their full and riveted attention. It’s a great time to really dig into science and make learning fun.
I’m going to show you how I teach my kids about magnets in a fun and memorable way, and if it resonates with you, give it a try with your kiddos!
Magnet Play Lesson Plan:
1. Introduction:
Begin by asking your kids what they already know about magnets. You can use this opportunity to dispel any misconceptions they might have (like, for example, that magnets can only stick to metal).
2. Demonstration:
Show your kids how magnets work by using a magnet to attract and repel other magnets or metal objects. You can also use this time to explain the different poles of a magnet and how they interact with each other.
3. Activity:
Now it’s time for the fun part! Divide your kids into teams and have them search the house for objects that they think might be magnetic. They can use a magnet to test their hypothesis, and then record their findings on a “Does It Stick?” chart.
4. Conclusion:
After your kids have had some time to experiment, come together as a group to discuss their findings. You can ask questions like “What surprised you about your results?” or “What did you learn about magnets today?”
Does It Stick? Chart:
To make a “Does It Stick?” chart, all you need is a piece of paper and a magnet. Draw a chart with two columns: “Yes!” and “No!”. Have your kids test different objects around the house with the magnet and record their findings in the appropriate column.
