When given a choice of books to review through Zondervan Publishing / Zonderkidz, I chose to review Bunny’s First Spring by Sally Lloyd-Jones and illustrated by David McPhail, because HEY! Springtime and Easter are just around the corner, and this seemed like a great book to read to my toddler Tessa!
While Tessa is still in the “destroy all books that aren’t board books” stage when left to her own devices, she does enjoy a good “big kid” paper page book when mom is reading to her! So I thought I’d give this book a chance and risk the “scribble on and at rip anything paper” wrath of Tessa.
When a bunny is born in spring, he sees the world as green and new and full of hope. But as the seasons change, the bunny worries that the earth may be dying. In bestselling author’s Sally Lloyd-Jones’ latest picture book celebrating the Easter season and rebirth, nature speaks to the bunny, assuring him of something more. Award-winning artist David McPhail’s whimsical illustrations reflect the beauty of the world around us as Lloyd-Jones’ inspirational text prompts readers to celebrate the changing seasons and the miracle of nature’s rebirth.
My Thoughts on the Book
As far as my daughter’s reaction goes, she enjoyed pointing out all of the barn animals and making critter sounds with each turn of the page, and stayed engaged for the majority of the book. Since there have been board books that get ZERO reaction from her, this is the initial “good book” litmus test.. and it passed! Haha!
While the illustration style is not my favorite, it is rather good. (My personal preference is for brighter, bolder artwork.. the soft, gentle muted tones style just bugs me. But that’s just my personal hang up, haha!) The text is engaging and actually MAKES SENSE (something rare in children’s books these days, I’m finding to my dismay) and so the re-read factor is good for adults.
Overall it’s a cute book, great to prep kids for springtime, Easter and even just for general reading. I’m not so smitten with the book that I’d recommend you run out and buy it for your little ones, but if you see it at a reasonable price and need a good spring themed read for your children, go ahead and check it out!

Okay folks, hit me with your favorite springtime reading recommendations (both children AND adult books!)
Bobo, do you have any links to catalogs or such showing the drawing instruction? I’d love to see any other artist associated with it!

to be honest in this operiod I’m totally in “fashion books” reading. I don’t know why but for me it is such a pleasure to know the history of fashion to better understand the present. It’s not about working – it’s a way to get lost in beautiful past adventures.

I usually get into “moods” with books, and recently I haven’t known WHAT I want to read! I’ve just been picking up what friends recommend recently since I can’t make up my mind! haha..
Do agree its a cute book. Nice picture to make it interesting for kids. I can’t suggest any books. Even if I did, it will be from those years for my daughter is now 30 years old.
It annoys the hell out of me if the stories don’t make any sense. The last book I got , also bunny and easter themed, just had random sentences on each page.
Right?!?!? Either they are underestimating the intelligence of children, or they just aren’t trying, haha. I have been throwing those books on the “Goodwill” pile whenever I come across them. They annoy me to no end!
My toddler loves the first 3 pages of Green Eggs and Ham, we can get no further than those 3 pages. At least she is reading, right? This sounds like a sweet book and I can’t help but like a book with bunnies in it 🙂
oh, i haven’t read this book yet but will surely check it out. i just read peter rabbit to lucas the other day and he enjoyed all the mischief! 🙂

I love this! I mean, it has bunnies in it. 🙂 And I also like the illustration style a lot. I will add this to my list because I keep buying children’s books even though I do not have children (yet).
Hi Gingi, the book looks great and good review. I think the muted tones of the illustration is for bigger children. I think bolder colors would attract younger kids better.
It sounds really great!
Sounds like a super cute kid’s book! Great post!

LOL, hey, sometimes retro books are the best! I plan on buying all of my childhood books from 30 years ago! 😉
This looks like a very cute book. This would be something that my niece and nephew would love.
This reminds me- I don’t have a spring reading list to speak of. Need to change that!

Yeah, Tessa’s attention span for books last about 3-4 pages before she tries to turn it into a coloring book! 😉
This looks adorable. Themed books are great for kids!

Ohhh, that’s one I need to put on my “read to Tessa” list!
The illustrations of the bunnies are really lovely! Personally I am attracted to such drawings and great to know that the story make sense too!

Spring and bunnies, two of my favourite things! Sounds like a lovely book

Yeah, my little one loves the brighter style books at the moment.. maybe when she’s older she’ll appreciate muted tones more!
This sounds like the cutest little book – reminds me a little of the Velveteen Rabbit, my favourite as a kid 🙂
Happy Easter!

I’m all about a book that actually makes sense. You’re so right that so many children’s books make no sense.
Nice to read a childrens book review as I was searching for a childrens book for my daughter
This looks like such a cute book! I love bunnies 🙂 Great review!
