It has been a while since I have blogged about urban homesteading topics like keeping chickens…
So for those of you wondering… YES, we still have chickens, YES we are still loving it! In fact, our little flock has, uhh… inadvertently grown. *cough cough*
So apparently this is what happens when you introduce unsexed baby chicks to the flock.. then fail to purge the roosters in a timely fashion. I sent my husband out to clean the chicken coop when I was massively pregnant, and he came back in with freshly hatched BABY CHICKS… we actually caught them in time to see them hatching, on Tessa’s birthday! It was a fun and TOTALLY unexpected birthday surprise for our four year old!
Anyhoo, with our recently expanded flock when I was approached about reviewing this book on 20 fun to make projects for backyard chickens, I jumped on it!! DIY? Chicken junk? I’m there.

Right?!??! My daughter saw the photo over my shoulder while posting and said, “Awwww!! So cute!!” haha..
Aw, congrats on the new baby chicks. Sounds like a good book for the new chicken keeper – sorry it didn’t hold anything new for you though.

Yeah, they hatched about 3 months ago, and now they look like chickens! haha!!… pretty sure one of them is a rooster too.. oops…
Very interesting post, my grandmother has chickens – i dont have space for it 😉
Chickens don’t need MUCH space.. I say do it! Chicken roommates?? 😉
Aww baby chickens are the cutest!
Aren’t they?!
This baby chick put a aww in our words and a smile in our face congrats. Have a great New Year 2018.
Awww, I am happy!
Seems like a great book Gingi. No chickens here, we’d have to petition the town board and pretty much……beg. And beg some more. They do not like them in our community! Sad. But yes to the DIY projects! Some maybe someday……
Same with our city.. it’s dumb.
Adorable pictures! Interesting book and this sounds like such a great family project. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you too my friend! <3
I’ve never seen a chicken build its own coop before, but I guess this book would be helpful for them.
The hardest part is the lack of hands…
So cute photos dear 😉
Thanks Ania!!

I would love to have chickens but we have a Jack Russell Terrier and she would cull the flock quicker than they could grow. All the best for 2018!
Oh man! We have a young lab, and she accidentally killed the rooster that made these chicks! It attacked her, and she thought it was playing.. oops!
I do not keep chickens, but I work at a vet that treats chickens. It is always fun to interact with them!
Hahaha, I didn’t even think people brought chickens in to a vet! How cool!
So cute! Did not know you had chickens. Too bad this was not for you but great for beginners indeed. chicken swing LOL? Happy New Year!
Yeah, thats actually a thing! haha..
we were on the verge of getting some chickens before i got pregnant, and now that project has definitely fallen by the wayside! it’s still on my bucket list though. love this post!
