A phrase we use in our house fairly often is, “Words have power.” They can hurt, they can heal, they can change your perception of reality… I would even argue that they can change reality, period.
As Shad Helmstetter says in his book, “What to Say When You Talk to Yourself”, we really are just thinking machines that never shut down. From early childhood we have been watching, listening to, sifting, sorting, analyzing, judging, cataloging, and storing everything that goes on about us and who we are. When we make vocal observations about ourselves or our reality, our brains are actively filing EVERYTHING away.
Often when we speak negatively, we think we are just being silly or salty. We reason that we don’t REALLY mean what we say, we are just exaggerating for emphasis or being facetious. But… here’s the thing… words really do have power. And they really ARE changing our experience of life, of ourselves and of our surroundings.
The more we tell ourselves something about ourselves or our situation, the more we will attract and accept thoughts and ideas that support and prove what we have been saying – even if we initially didn’t “really” believe what we were saying.
Everything – EVERYTHING – you tell yourself about yourself becomes a directive to your subconscious mind. And anytime you make a statement about yourself that is negative, you are directing your subconscious mind to make you become the person that you just described.
For this reason, there are some very common phrases that truly do deserve to be kicked to the curb, for good, for our OWN goods. Here are just a few examples of frequently used negative self-talk to eliminate from your vocabulary. (I should note, this is a subject I am actively working on myself… if you ever hear me say any of these things… tell me to stop! lol!)
Things to Never Say, Ever Again:
It’s going to be another one of those days.
I just know it won’t work.
Nothing ever goes right for me.
That’s just my luck.
I don’t have the talent.
I never have enough time.
I just don’t have the patience for that.
I don’t have the energy.
I never have enough money.
I gain weight easily.
I’ve never been any good at that.
My house is always a mess.
I never win anything.
I’m getting too old for this.
Someone always beats me to it
I never get a break.
There’s just no way.
That’s impossible.
