How to Date Night Like a Boss (Surprisingly Classy Date Night Ideas for Geeks)
11 September, 20166 Min Read
Guess what guys?! I had a date WEEKEND! Not a date night. A whole, weekend long, date-freaking-weekend!
My mom watched the kiddos so we could catch up on some projects, hobbies and housework, and it turned into the most majestically luxurious experience I have had in awhile – and we didn’t even leave the house! (With the exception of a trip or two to the store for supplies.)
So, as I have said before, my hubby and I like to think of ourselves as classy nerds. It’s not unusual for us to pair a nice wine and cheese and then settle down for an evening of anime and crafting EVA foam armor for cosplay projects. But with two toddlers, it has been getting harder and harder to find time for our nerdy indulgences.
So when we found ourselves baby free for the weekend, we went into romance mode faster than the Millennium Falcon on the Kessel Run. (har har har)
What really kicked off our romantic weekend was a flower delivery from ProFlowers.com (CLICK HERE to view!) that really set the scene for this romantic date-weekend-in.
Ordering from ProFlowers.com is redunkulously easy (I requested mine, the Premium Pink Sapphire Arrangement on my smart phone) as part of a fun National Romance Month challenge, and the flowers arrived at the door fresh from the grower, with the buds just on the verge of bursting into bloom.. So no time consuming trips to the floral shop for us!
When my flowers arrived on my doorstep, they were snug and secure in their little cardboard shipping casket (it totes looked like a casket, haha), and I followed the instructions provided… Cut about 1″ off the ends…… Remove any leaves that fall below the water line in the vase….. Add a packet of flower food, which comes with the shipment…. Yadda yadda yadda… super duper easy.
It took about three days for my flowers to REALLY burst into bloom (and I took these photos before the full bloom, dangit!) but even pre-floral eruption, they looked swell!
So with our table looking glorious with this gorgeous arrangement, and a quick trip to Joanns Fabrics and Lowes for weekend supplies, we were all set for date night in!
We spent time playing Epic Mickey on the Wii. We drew up a traditional Japanese hakama pattern from scratch (using a pre-existing pair we owned from a Rurouni Kenshin cosplay as inspiration) and worked on Jonathan’s Inuyasha cosplay pants while watching The Fifth Element for the millionth time. We made up our favorite cocktails and FINALLY tackled cleaning out the dance pads on the DDR machine (which proved to take up 90% of our weekend.. no joke, took about 16 hours total. Will blog more on THAT endeavor later…). And we made Walt Disney’s favorite Chili Recipe from our Disneyland Cookbook, and I read old 1930s vintage Floyd Gottfredson Mickey Mouse cartoon strips to Jonathan. It was a freaking sweet weekend!
The Inuyasha cosplay pants we sewed all in one sitting, with no pattern! (Go us!) I worked the sewing machine while Jonathan worked on folding the waistband pleats. Teamwork!
My handsome hubby getting to work on taking apart the dance pads on the DDR machine… we had NO IDEA what we were getting into.
Working LATE into the night on getting the dance pads ready to deep clean. Took about 16 hours total. Look at how nasty those things are!!!
Dance pad arrows, before and after being cleaned.
The dance pads, before and after being cleaned. I think we did a decent job, all things considered!
My hands after our grand Work On The DDR Machine Date Weekend.
So after we had our epic weekend of epicness, this got me to thinking.. in my humble opinion, the best way to juggle a geeky love of all things geeky with some good old fashioned classy date night goodness is to PAIR the two, in epic ways. Take something timeless and classy, and something hopelessly geeky, and mash them together into a beautiful one-two punch of romantic geekiness. Think of it as a K.O. Combo in the fighting game of love. (Lol, that was corny, even for me.) But anyway! Here are some of my favorite geeky / classy date night combos. I hope you <3 them as much as I do!
Get Him / Her / Each Other Flowers
Tried and true, nothing says a tale as old as time quite like a bouquet of roses… or any flower for that matter! There is just something about a bouquet that does wonders to set the tone for any date night. Flowers especially pair well with:
Make a nerdy recipe from your favorite fandom and eat by candlelight.
Buy a nerdy cookbook (there are a redunkulous amount on the market these days) and try something new. Pick out a fandom realm classic (lembas bread from Lord of the Rings, anyone?) or recreate favorites from places special to you (we love cooking through Disneyland Resort recipes!) If it makes your nerdy heart (and taste buds!) sing, go for it!
Give Each Other a Massage
This one needs no special explanation. *wink wink nudge nudge* Massage especially pairs well with:
Rewatch your favorite anime / TV / movie series together.
Who cares if you have seen it for the millionth time? You pull out that box set of Mel Brooks classics / Star Wars trilogy / Trigun bootleg DVDs and you watch Firefly One. More. Time! Bonus points if you both quote all the lines at the same time.
Pop a Bottle of Champagne or Make Some Fancy Cocktails
This sets the tone almost effectively as flowers do! I recommend Bellatore as an amazingly delicious and reasonably priced sparkling wine, and as to cocktails, check out some of our favorites: Freemans Planters Punch, a Classic Sazerac, or Old Fashioned Margarita. These drinks especially pair well with:
Pull an all-nighter on your favorite MMORG or Two Player Video Game
Our date night video game of choice is hands down World of Warcraft. Here are some photos of our characters on actual virtual dates in and around WoW. (I know, super romantic, amirite?!)
Take a Long Walk Together
Trust and communication are pretty much the bedrock of any healthy relationship. Taking long walks and talks together is one of the sweetest and most relationship boosting things you can do together. Even better if you take a stroll through nature! A good long walk is best paired with:
Cuddle Up and Read Your Favorite Books / Comics Together
Jonathan has been having me listen to audio books of Harry Potters recently, while I have been reading him old 1930s Mickey Mouse Comics. Geeking out over fandoms in the written word takes geeky romance to a whole new level. (Dare I say, A WHOLE NEW WOOOOORLD!!!!!) < —- I dare.
These are just some of my favorite classy geeky dates.. Let me know if you have any geeky romance ideas to add to this little list of mine, I would love to hear them!
I’m afraid we would be pathetic with video games, but I could go for a scrabble-a-thon or a good game of trivia. I love how delivered flowers just get better and better for the first couple of days… they are an indulgence, but such a delight! What a fun weekend.
Gingi, I am so happy to hear you had some time with just you and the hubby… it was lovely for your mother to take the girls for you… all parents need some time and really having a weekend is a must have every once and a while… I am glad you had fun and yay to flowers, they are beautiful xox
I am definately adding this one to the Things I Never Thought I Would Be Happy About pile of things, now that I have kids.. a whole weekend to work! haha! But it was so fun!!
Glad for your weekend Gingi. My wife would never go for most of what you have done (except the flowers). neither of us play video games although we have been known to the Wii against each other. Her idea is…well…sit around and do nothing. Except it does include a meal out.
I think you know that romance to us includes great geekery too! Also, someone once told me that Pro Flowers is unmatched, and I tend to agree. I only use them.
What absolutely great tips on how to do romance and date nights from the comfort of your own home. By the way, I just love Pro Flowers, too and have used them here in the past, as well 🙂
A date weekend sounds so wonderful! Looks like you two had a fun and productive weekend with it too. Your flower photos are gorgeous. I wish we could have seen them at their peak. Thanks so much for joining us at the #happynowlinkup!

Hahaha, the Wii is the one video game console that has brought the world of gamers and non-gamers together! lol
I did a post once for 50 date night ideas–lots of great ones on there. OMG at that machine and how dirty it was!!! Ack! Great job cleaning it.

Wow! What a weekend! Parents … take note! The kiddos survive and mom and dad thrive!
Seriously, the best present my parents can give us nowadays is a weekend without the kiddos now and then! lol
