When I was around 14 or 15 years old, I decided that I would read one to three chapters from the Bible every morning, along with a corresponding commentary on the Scriptures I had just read.
With the exception of a few periods in my early 20’s where I fell away from this discipline for a few weeks or months, I have kept up this personal educational pursuit for over 15 years now. (Yes, I am THAT stubborn!)
Reading from the Word of God, and learning more through commentaries is how I start EVERY. SINGLE. MORNING. It is a great way to start the day, getting grounded in Gods Word.
Now, I like to doodle in my books. Taking notes, underlining important info, and so on. While I will be the first to admit that I am REALLY rough on my books, I donโt destroy them. Unlikeโฆ. My toddlers.
Every morning, after my study, the kiddos decide to mimic what they see me doingโฆ scribbling in the big book! Over the last year, from excessive doodling, playing, pulling, throwing and so on, my Wycliff Bible Commentary is really a marvel in modern toddler demolition. Check it out! Both covers missing. Whole pages ripped out. Whole pages drawn on. It is really something impressive to behold!

What nearly every single page looks like inside.

Now, I have reviewed books with Moody Publishers before, they are one of my all time favorite publishing businesses. They do not make shabby books. These books are TOUGH. I mean, it took over a year before the toddlers could beat this book into submission. But beat it they did, and I was at a point where if I look at the book wrong, it will fall apart. Which puts a bit of a damper on my Bible Study time.
So I sent out an e-mail, explaining my predicament with the tatters of my Wycliffe Commentary, and asked if they would be interested in sending me a replacement for review. And they said yes!! (How cool are they?!)
So hereโs a bit more info on the Wycliffe Bible Commentary by Moody Publishers:
Scholars from across the conservative spectrum in American Protestant Christianity have combined to produce a valuable one-volume commentary on the entire Bible.ย The Wycliffe Bible Commentaryย brings together scholars from 15 different denominations and 25 schools of Christian higher education, and focuses on determining the meaning of the text. It is neither a devotional commentary nor a technical exegesis, but is an insightful help for serious Bible students looking to understand the text. Introductory information such as authorship, dating and an outline of the text is included for every book of the Bible, as is a bibliography for each book. Thus,ย The Wycliffe Bible Commentaryย proves itself a valuable resource for any serious Bible student.
Overview ofย The Wycliffe Bible Commentary:
Theologically conservative (Evangelical)
Semi-technical (Greek and Hebrew words are transliterated when they appear)
A phrase-by-phrase commentary based on the King James Version (KJV)
Geared for Bible students and pastors
I have been reading 1-3 chapter every morning from this study for about 3 years now, and am about to wrap up (just finishing the book of Acts). While it is not my FAVORITE commentary (that on goes to Matthew Henrys Commentary) it is a very good read, with valuable insights and information nonetheless. Lots of references for further study and reading, and it offers many different insights from various viewpoints, for expanded reading.
So THANK YOU AGAIN Moody Publishers, for providing wonderful quality books (both content and construction) and for your stellar customer service!
This is a fantastic habit that I need to do as well. It’s important to get some good words of wisdom to start the day and to stay grounded. Another blogger friend of mine found a Bible Planner with various topics and stickers and it’s wonderful. Thanks for sharing such wonderful and thoughtful tips, Gingi. You’re the best! Hugs…
Yeah, it is one of the best habits I have ever cultivated, and it keeps me so grounded! Also keeps me sharp on where things are located in the Bible and so on. I am glad you enjoyed the post!! *hugs*
That’s awesome that they sent you a new one. Now your kids can scribble to their hearts content. lol
Noooooooooooo!! lol… actually, their new thing is LICKING books?!?! They have been slobbering all over the new one. Agh!
Kudos to you for making the time to read and study daily… that’s pretty amazing xox
My girls were great at destroying my books, I had to hide them buy some cheap ones for them to draw on… it’s a part of toddlers โกโกโก
Yeah, I have made my office (where all my books are) completely off limits to the kids, unless I am in there with them… but they still manage widespread destruction!
Oh goodness. You can’t be angry with them, but they can tear through so many things. I so remember. This post made me smile.
My son tore up everything. He we to both bathrooms and took all the toilet paper off each roll and then plugged both toilets. Bless his heart. I think that was his best destruction.
Have a fabulous day and please join us for Awww Mondays. โบ
Right??!?! Their cuteness is like natural armor against anger. haha. Oh man, my kiddos have yet to plug up a toiler *knock on wood* but I hear that is a common occurrence with toddlers!
15 years, you are a amazing. I should pic up such a similar habit. I lve your sentence “a marvel in modern toddler demolition” lol!
Hahaha, time just flies when you are stubborn! ๐
They really destroyed that book. Nice of the publisher to send you a new one. ๐
Yeah, they are pretty much tiny demolition experts..
The Moody Publishers are really great, this Wycliffe Bible is great, really looks beautiful and with transliterated words from Greek and Hebrew, really excellent! I don’t read the Bible everyday, but I many times watch movies about the scriptures. I really looove them. And soon we will have Easter and there will be many many movies to watch! Your kids show that they are creative, maybe you can take one of the pages and frame it? Like an art work, and they may like the result one day, and maybe it also stimulates people to read the holy book. Just a suggestion, cause the words there are also art! Hope you have a very lovely week!

I am more of a book girl than a movie girl… I don’t know how that happened, I just lost the attention span to stay tuned into films over the years, haha! But I do make exceptions around the holidays, and watch inspiring religious films with the family on occasion. I already tossed the old commentary, but that would have been a fun project / idea, haha! They really worked a number on that commentary!
Interesting post https://bysinkj.blogspot.com
Ooooo! This sounds really good. I think I need to get one too!
I admire your daily practice. It’s a great way to stay grounded and see the day in a whole new light. Sounds like one I need to start. Wonderful publishers for providing you with a new book.
Right?! It was a great act of customer service. Makes me super happy to be a fan of theirs!
I think you have inspired me to read at little from the bible every day. I went to Catholic school when I was a girl, but I remember nothing and it’s pathetic.
Yay! I was inspiring!! haha! It is really an easy habit to keep up since a chapter doesn’t take too terribly long to read.. like… 5 mins? It is a great investment of time!
Ahah so glad you now have a new one! ๐
ME. TOO!! haha
Great post and awesome that you have a new one!
What a wonderful habit! The commentary sounds very interesting ๐

This Bible Commentary sounds amazing! I’ll definitely have to look into it because I’m always looking up commentaries online when reading, so this would be much more convent and I love that it’s formatted for Pastors and educators, so you get that deep teaching, yet in a practical way. A little side note, have you ever listened to Derek Prince!?? My husband and I love him! He’s since passed away, but has left such a legacy that they have a free Podcast with all of his teachings that we listen to daily, I think you’d love him, too; he’s truly amazing and I’ve never heard anyone teach quite like him! Thanks for sharing, beauty, and I hope you’re having a great week so far!

I believe this particular commentary is available online at BlueLetterBible.com.. but I much prefer having a physical book in my hands when I am studying and reading. (I guess I am old fashioned that way!) I will definitely have to check out Derek Prince. I only recently started listening to podcasts, so I will look him up! <3
That’s awesome you were able to get a new copy for review – thanks for sharing!! Have you ever tried bible journaling? I’ve seen some pics and it looks cool.
Uh-uh, you will have to share a link with me, now I am curious!!
One? Books, necklaces, lipsticks, bedside table lamps, all that has fallen into my toddlers hands is subject to complete destruction.
Hahahaha, yeah, I almost wish I could see the $$$ figure of things my kids have destroyed…. almost….
How nice that they have sent you a brand new replacement!
