I requested this NIV Devotional Bible for my husband, since he expressed interest in finding a Bible study geared specifically toward husbands or fathers. This one is a little bit of both, and I was familiar with Robert Wolgemuth’s writing before (as a dad of little girls, he’s written parenting books that specifically interest Jon and I!) so I thought we’d give this daily devotional bible a go!
About the Book
Book description from Amazon.com:
If you’re a dad, it’s your dream to leave your children a rich inheritance. And regardless of your financial situation, you can! The NIV Dad’s Devotional Bible is filled with challenging and helpful information to help you be a man who honors God, lives faithfully and loves his family—a man whose life will build a priceless legacy for generations to come.
A tall order? Sure. But with God’s help, you can do it. With 260 down-to-earth devotions, one for every day of the work week, as well as seven insightful “Building Your Children” articles, author Robert Wolgemuth will lead you through the blueprint of godly fatherhood. And with other features such as “The Bible for Dads” that gives a fatherly spin on each Bible book and a helpful “Questions Kids Ask” index in the back, the hardcover NIV Dad’s Devotional Bible will give you the tools you need to be a fully equipped, God-honoring father. The interior design with its warm brown color delivers a design dads will find inviting. Also includes the full text of the New International Version of the Bible for your inspiration and enlightenment.
My Thoughts on the Book
Okay, so I read every single days commentary, PLUS the commentary afterward. No joke. I am just OCD like that. What, don’t look at me like that. I’m THOROUGH darnit! (I did get some weird looks reading this cover to cover in the sauna at the gym.)
Anyway, the daily devotions are short, sweet, and while not always to the point (sometimes Wolgemuth takes forever to make a point, and will share long stories just to absentmindedly try and tie it in with the daily Scripture) it is still an uplifting and inspiring read.
As a wife and mother, obviously the writing was not targeted to women, so a lot of the heart to heart, man to man talk didn’t hit home with me.. but there were a lot of moments I thought, “Oh man, my husband needs to read this!” Which I’d say is a good indicator of quality content!
If this was a “read cover to cover” book, I’d be disappointed, but as a year long, 5 minute a day read, it’s something I’m happy to have my husband reading and meditating on along with God’s Word! I’m happy to get it for my husband and would recommend it to other dads / husbands out there!
Gingi this sounds like an interesting daily read for dads… we have similar items like this in my Faith. I like that your husband likes being so involved in his childrens life… it’s sweet ♡
Don’t do a daily devotional, but make sure to read my Bible every day. Read Bible stories to my girlies every day. Favorite story. Daniel in the Lion’s Den followed closely by David and Goliath. Love the idea of my husband reading a daily devotional. I bet you’d love Meg Meeker’s book, Strong Father’s, Strong Daughters…..I love it because she’s a Ped. Doctor who talks about father’s specifically connecting and raising Christ-centered daughters who are strong because both their earthly father and heavenly father have invested in them. Check it out!!
I always make a point of reading my Bible every day, but I usually have a study to accompany my reading when I want to dig a little deeper. I’m going through the Wycliff commentary right now. Pretty basic, nothing too exciting. My favorite commentary to date is Matthew Henrys.. love that book when doing Bible studies! I will def check out that book you recommend! <3 <3
EVERYONE has time enough to set 5 minutes aside for the Creator of the Universe! My hubby is one of those who is “too busy” to set aside time for things.. so these types of studies are good for his personality type!
I switch back and forth with devotionals. I always read Daily Guideposts before I go to bed, and at the moment I am reading “Streams in the Desert” in the morning. I think devotionals are a wonderful “touch point” for the day, and you can usually find time for them, even if you are busy. This would have been perfect for my husband when my kids were growing up!
sounds very interesting, nice post

Lately I’ve been doing the She Reads Truth devotionals and my husband has been reading the He Reads Truth ones. We like them! This looks like it might be a good option for when those run out, though. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
You read this in the sauna at the gym? You are hilarious! I am impressed you read it cover to cover, and I am glad you liked it overall.
LOL, yeah.. I have stopped trying to justify myself for my oddness, haha… LET THEM STARE!!! lol
Sounds interesting! 🙂

What a life-changing gift to give to our men. And 5 minutes a day?
Yep, this we can do.
Here’s what I’m savoring in my Bible reading these days …http://www.lindastoll.net/2015/10/morning-invitations-savor.html

I don’t do a devotional… but I have thought about adding it to my day!

I have to do my studies in the morning, or I’ll not do them at all.. my evenings are always far too random and hectic for me to have structure, lol…
Many thanks for dropping by Pen and Paper.
A bit OCD myself in that once started I CANNOT leave a book but have to finish it.
For a lot of years I was given a calendar with a devotional a day which I used to religiously read.
Anyway, nice to meet you, I’ve enjoyed my visit.
Thanks for stopping by! Nice to meet a kindred spirit! I hope we can keep in touch!! <3

Thank you, Gingi. I’m sure my husband would love this book. I used to read daily devotionals, I really need to get back to that.
You really should! It’t the best way to start your day! <3
