Planting Flags at the Visalia Cemetery for Memorial Day
25 May, 20152 Min Read
It’s Memorial Day weekend, a day on which those who died in active military service are remembered. When my friend Michele invited me and my family out to help plants flags on veterans graves at the Visalia Cemetery, I was honored and excited to be a part of this solemn act to honor those who have given all in service to their country.
What we remember—and honor—on Memorial Day is heroic sacrifice. We acknowledge those who nobly gave of themselves, even unto death, for a purpose they believed was greater than themselves.
True sacrifice is always at the service of life. We learn this from Jesus, who made the ultimate sacrifice and remained faithful through his Passion, death, and Resurrection. Jesus’ greater purpose for this sacrifice was our well-being—that we might have life and have it abundantly.
This Memorial Day, as we remember all who have served and sacrificed on our behalf, let us not forget what Jesus was willing to give up for us—and the lessons we can learn from that perfect example of sacrifice.
It was humbling to take time out of our weekend to honor those who served, those who sacrificed and those who helped to uphold the ideals of this One Nation Under God. Happy Memorial Day and God Bless!
I was looking at all of the families and young kids there helping and getting involved, and I realized, this is what I want for my kids. I want to model this kind of community involvement and convey these important life lessons!
What a wonderful tribute to Memorial Day! Also, I just read your goat post, and I’m sorry to hear your city council is giving you such a hard time. #ImProGoat
What fabulous parents you are for taking your daughters to do this.It is such a wonderful experience for children. Since my children were babies, we have gone to clean up family graves every Memorial day and to place flags on our family members who served in the armed forces.
Beautiful photos.. all of these! I think that’s my favorite thing about America, the pride you all have for your country and the people who fight for it!
Gingi, this is a lovely Memorial Day tribute and I really appreciate the analogy to Christ and the ultimate sacrifice He made for us. Lovely photographs to accompany the post as well.
Our town has a parade and then a little service at the end where we read the Gettysburg address, the official order for Memorial Day to be set aside as a holiday, the winning entry by a youth in an essay contest, the names of the town residents who have fallen in any war since the civil war, a 3 gun salute, dedication of memorial wreaths, and a keynote address. The whole event reminds me of what Memorial Day is really about.. many of us celebrate and have fun, but for other families across our nation, it is a rough day.
Hi Gingi! What a perfect way to spend this holiday. Your work really inspired me, and I know you did the same for everyone you worked with, and who saw the flags at the grave sites. It’s so important to never forget that our freedom isn’t free. People really did lose their lives, and were hurt in innumerable ways by war. I know that I benefit from their sacrifices.
Beautiful post,

what a wonderful activity to do with your family on such a special occasion. it looks like everyone had a great time!

Gorgeous photos and Scarlet has those same cute denim-looking leggings.
What a meaningful family thing. I take my kids to a parade every year but it’s not all fun and games. They ask all sorts of questions about soldiers and I try to answer as best as I can.
Yeah, I consider myself very well versed and well spoken when it comes to explaining things of historical or spiritual significance, but I feel like I am completely incompetent when it comes to explaining things to children!! eep!
Cookouts and long weekends are great, but this – this is what it’s all about. If you go the weekend without even a silent salute to those who sacrificed for our freedom, you don’t get it. You and your family most definitely get it.
I think this is such a beautiful Holiday, how lovely that you celebrate it!
I love these pictures, you have a really amazing family!

What a wonderful thing to do as a family. Next year we should try to go to the service they have at Armona/Grangeville cemetery.
I guess Visalia has one too.. we were going to go to that one, and help to take the flags down, but Jonathan had to work on Memorial Day! 🙁
What a wonderful thing to do!
Nice photos and lovely family you’ve got.
