Shamalama, a level one human rogue, nervously approached the alleyway hoping to make a trade. She hoped the relics she brought with her would be enough to for the exchange. Out of the shadows a giant rat charged, she turn in surprise and rolled initiative!
I’ve been playing different versions of the role playing game, Dungeons and Dragons, since I was about 10 years old. It’s been mostly a family affair through the years either playing with my brother or with my husband and friends. Now we have started playing with our children.
For this review, I have been fortunate enough to receive this beautiful Cage Dice Set with Decader in Stainless Steel, Made by Wombat and sold by Shapeways. I originally was interested in the white plastic set but they encouraged me to try out one of the metal dice sets because, well, they are that awesome. Shapeways is a company that brings the community together to create using 3D Printing, visit its forums to learn more about how you can be involved or shop for some of their sweet sweet gear.
Unboxing the Cage Dice Set!
Appearance:
These stainless steel dice are described as “Bronze-infused stainless steel with visible print lines and a rough feel” and I see more of the bronze in my set then were pictured on the website (CLICK HERE to see), which I didn’t mind at all, however one of my dice had a more silver look than the others, the decader (percentage) 10 sided dice is noticeably more silver than bronze compared to the others. The dice in the picture on the website are inked, but mine were not. I didn’t realize that mine wouldn’t come inked and the only reason it matters is because by design, the cage dice make it somewhat difficult to read the numbers. The dice had a few bits of metal, like sand, that came with the dice. All I need is a few minutes with a toothpick, and I could easily pick the bits out. With the exception of the decader the dice are hollow. Many people mentioned in the comments that they had inked theirs on their own and just by reading the comments you can see how much people love this company and what they are doing in the tech world.
Functionality:
The set has a pleasantly hefty weight that is really fun to roll. They appear to be appropriately balanced to roll randomly to ensure fair game play. The cute glitter green dice in the photos are what I have left of my first seven piece dice set for size reference and I used them to show, that for the most part, the dice are very close to the same size as your average dice set. My 20 sided dice, had a corner that was rounded off which seems like a flaw in the processing. The dice are metal so they do make tiny dents in paper, but you would have to be trying to do damage to hurt a tabletop.
Overall:
Overall I am very pleased with the dice set. They are beautiful, creatively designed, and fun to roll. The dice have an ancient artifact sort of appeal that would make an unique gift to present for your gaming friends. This cage set version is one of a variety of dice sets including thorn dice and more, check them out in their Dice section under Games.

I started playing when I was 12, but it was “DSA”, the German equivalent, and I only ever tried D&D when I was around 17. Sadly my husband doesn’t play, so I only roll my dice very rarely with friends. My kids are still too small to be interested.
You should find a group to play with till the little ones get older!!!
it makes great gift
Such a great giveaway opportunity, thanks! My hubby would love these.
Good luck Christine! <3
I never heard of D & D before now. However, my grandson collects dice. He took an interest in them at an early age. I really don’t know what the fascination was-lol.
my 14 year old loves to play D&D so I would gift these to her, or not lol maybe keep them for mama
