I first decided to get in on the eco-conscious and greener living bandwagon in regards to fashion about 10 years ago. I took one look at the price of an organic cotton t-shirt and made a HARD u-turn. I know you vote with your dollars, but at the moment, I did not HAVE the dollars to justify dropping on an organic tee!
That’s why I felt compelled to pick up this book, Style Naturally by Summer Rayne Oakes, which outlines the processes and social cost of various clothing and beauty items and makes some great suggestions for future purchases. You can read about the true cost of buying fair trade versus NOT, or conventional cotton over organic and so on, and move forward a more empowered and educated buyer.
Reading this book I felt compelled to look at the cost of those regular cotton t-shirts again and I was FLOORED! At the risk of sounding like an old lady, I didn’t realize how much could change in 10 years!!! I found certified organic cotton t-shirts, socks, underwear and other basic clothing items starting at just $7 for tees, $4 for underwear, and so on… TOTALLY AFFORDABLE!!!
Next time I need new clothes in this weight loss journey, I am SO buying organic, local and fair trade when possible. In the meantime, I’m having fun browsing the interwebs for some brands and styles I would love to support with my next purchases. <3
