Todays geek culture inspired recipe is literally out of this world… some would even say its extra-tastestrial! (Har har har!)
The UFO Burger – inspired by my recent X-Files binge-fest – features a thick meat patty that has been invaded by a cheddar, green onion and olive stuffing and is chock full of alien green guacamole, alfalfa sprouts, and a cheesy green pepper relish.
I decided to make a UFO Burger for a couple of reasons:
1. I was hungry and a burger sounded good.
2. Every geek culture genre has its share of cookies, or cakes, or donuts, or fill-in-the-blank food that feature imagery from the series. (Wookie Cookies, anyone??) But X-Files has no such imagery inspired foods. I thought that it was time to remedy that! With hamburgers. Because… hamburgers.
3. I am in love with this scene from episode two of season one, with a very young, very stoned Seth Green, using a hamburger to describe the UFO that he saw to Mulder:
EMIL/SETH GREEN: Sometimes they come in real low, and just put on the scares right, it’s like eeoou-ra and then they just hang there, and hover without making a sound. And you just think, you know, who turned down the volume right.
MULDER: *pulls out a photo of a UFO* Do they look anything like this?
EMIL/SETH GREEN: No, they look exactly like that.
*next scene*
SCULLY: You believe it all, don’t you?
MULDER: Why wouldn’t I?
SCULLY: Mulder, did you see their eyes? If I were that stoned I…
MULDER: Hoo-hoo. If you were that stoned, what?
SCULLY: Mulder, you could have shown that kid a picture of a flying hamburger and he would have told you that’s exactly what he saw.
Introducing The UFO Burger
I really cannot take credit for this recipe… this was the result of many geeky minds meeting in my kitchen for some good old fashioned girls night fun. My girls Bree, Sabrina and Cat came over to create the crash landing debut of this tasty recipe.
The burger stuffing recipe came from a tried and true Washington State cookbook I picked up from some of my frequent travels to the Pacific Nothwest to visit the in-laws. The guacamole recipe came from something Cat whipped up. And the various fillings and plating of the burger was the result of all of us ladies circling the plate and playing with our food. (The alfalfa sprouts look like the grass around the crash landing!! etc. etc…)
After we whipped up these burgers that we all slightly tweaked to taste (can you imagine people on this planet exist that don’t like guacamole!! Its true! *cough*Sabrina*cough*) we all watched a cheesy shipper type episode of the X-Files. Good times!!
So this is a multi-person project… The result? This bad boy will abduct your taste buds… it is out of this world tasty!
You Will Need:
1 ½ pounds of lean ground beef
1 2 ½ can of chopped black olives
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 small bunch of green onions, chopped
2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
4 avocados
4 green onions, chopped
1 tomato, diced
Juice of one lime
Salt and pepper, to taste
Butter lettuce
Alfalfa sprouts
Sliced tomato
Sliced green bell pepper
Hamburger buns, toasted
How to Make:
Divide the beef into 8 parts and shape into patties (do not squeeze all the juice from the beef).
In a bowl, mix together the olives, bell pepper, cheese, 1 bunch of green onions and mayonnaise. Place a generous portion of the filling on top of 4 single patties. Cover each with the remaining 4 patties, pressing the edges of each to secure the filling. (Reserve the rest of the unused filling to use as a relish topping on the hamburger patties.) Cook the patties to desired doneness.
While burgers are cooking prepare the hamburger fillings. Mash together the avocados, 4 green onions, tomato, lime juice and salt and pepper to make a chunky guacamole. Toast the hamburger buns. And slice the tomato and green bell peppers into thick slices.
To construct the hamburger, spread a generous amount of guacamole on the bottom bun. Next, put down a thick layer of alfalfa sprouts, tomato slices, and green pepper slices. Next, place your stuffed hamburger patty. Top with a lettuce leaf and reserved filling / relish. Spread more guacamole on the top of the bun, and then skewer together! Enjoy!
I like the addition of olives and it’s something I will try for sure. Great team effort.
Thanks Tandy!! I was nervous to see how my hardcore foodie friend bloggers would take this one, haha! 😉

i love putting anything and everything on my burgers (have you gone to the counter? it’s basically build your own burgers but there’s so many options), so all the veggies and guac sound amazing!
You made this yourself? You know, I’ve never actually tried making a burger before – very impressed right now! It looks beyond delicious and the inclusion of green bell pepper is sooooooo good. Great job!!
